CHAPTER 21

Thursday

After shooting out the lights in the parking lot, Erin and Sydney had run in the opposite direction from where they last saw Seamus Finney. They maintained a varying distance between each other to make them a more difficult target yet still able to maintain visual contact in case Finney came after them. The jaunt back to their unmarked van was uneventful and they took turns repairing and modifying their disguises while the other sister kept an eye out.

The scrum with Finney had damaged their makeup. They both wore prosthetic noses, wigs, even their chins and cheekbones were enhanced. They didn’t have time to invest in a full makeover, but a new wig and glasses did wonders. They wore reversible jackets which were changed and after a quick check and reload of their weapons, the Moyers returned to campus in the same manner as they had left, maintaining a distance and heads on a swivel.

Erin and Sydney set up in triangular vantage points. Erin posted in the cover of a small copse of pines. She could see Hannah Turner’s dorm window, now dark, and the front entrance of the large rectangular residence hall. Sydney had found cover between two large exterior heating units next to another dorm. She could see Turner’s window and the back exit. The only way the man could approach Turner would be from inside the dormm and while that was certainly possible, it was the least probable scenario. Now it became a waiting game.

The waiting was part of the job. Sometimes the women would be required to hole up in position for days. While those situations were rare, they had done so in order to strike an unsuspecting target. There were still a few hours before daybreak. The Moyers assumed if the man were to make his move, it would be during the time the students were heading out for class or breakfast. It’s what they would do.

The hours soon passed. The bone-chilling dampness of the night before had moved east. Bright morning sunlight gradually spread over Gettysburg College and with it the happy chirping of birds. The air was still cold, but the sun offered some soothing warmth. Squirrels scurried at high-speed foraging for food. The squirrels that lived on campus were as accustomed to stale pizza crusts as they were to acorns as dietary staples.

It was seven fifteen when, just like the squirrels, the students began to emerge from their burrows. At first it was a trickle of early risers, but it didn’t take long for the trickle to become a steady stream of students. Some heading to an early sports practice, some heading to breakfast at the dining hall, and some off to class.

Hannah Turner emerged from her building dressed in sweats, hair in a braid, and a backpack slung over one shoulder. She was flanked by two friends with two more trailing behind in the same level of attire. All five were chattering loudly about an upcoming class and how annoying their roommates were.
